If you run an indy hyperlocal in NJ, we’ve got to say that you’re in a great place to be. Not only do you have a community of publishers in neighboring area, but you’ve also got the NJ News Commons helping to incubate the industry.
We wrote last month about how the News Commons were accepting applications for hyperlocal upstarts in NJ. They also happen to be accepting applications for existing sites that could use $2500 to fund more in-depth reporting projects.
Here’s a snippet from press release:
The NJ News Commons at Montclair State University will be awarding up to eight $2,500 awards to fund in-depth reporting projects at existing sites.
The “Grow and Strengthen” grants are provided through the New Jersey Recovery Fund.
Preference goes to sites in Sandy-ravaged areas, but all local in-depth reporting projects or community under-served by media will be considered. Freelance journalists and citizen journalists are welcome to apply.
Read more about the initiative here.
A panel of judges will select the grant recipients. Judges include Star-Ledger columnist and Pulitzer finalist Mark DiIonno; Merrill Brown, director of the School of Communication and Media; and hyperlocal publisher and investigative journalist Polly Kreisman.
Polly’s a customer of Broadstreet, and a deep-diving investigative reporter that you might have seen on TV in the tri-state area. The judging is in good hands.
As for the rules, applications for each program must be received by Monday, September 9 at 11:59 pm.
If you have any questions or nominees to recommend, you can write to Laurie Petersen, a Hoboken-based journalist who is managing the program under Debbie Galant, undisputed the queen of hyperlocal.
